For Rain Only—My sweet friend, please care for this and give to my attorney, Alex Palmer. You’re a rare gem. Will miss you.

Jack

(Watch out for Malcolm for me.)

“Oh my,” she gasped. She quickly returned the letter to its place in the Bible and returned downstairs.

“I’m off then,” Rain said.

“Thanks again, Rain, we couldn’t have done the lunch without you.” Samantha and Rain hugged.

Rain blew kisses through the air. “See all of you later.”

Samantha poked Malcolm. “Knucklehead. Walk her out.”

He saluted and followed Rain to her car.

“Why, thank you, sir,” Rain offered as she stepped inside her car and shut the door. She turned the key and rolled down the window. She looked into his eyes and saw Jack.

“I meant to ask earlier, did you finish your book?”

“Book?”

“Oh, come on, your novel, your masterpiece.”

“Not quite.”

“You making progress, Hemingway?”

“Great, comparisons to a guy that killed himself. Thank you, thank you so much.”

“I was comparing the talent, Mr. Cracker Wise.”

“Mr. Cracker Wise?”

“Wise Cracker, you knew what I meant.” Rain’s teeth dazzled.

“Rain, you’re sweet, but that’s not fair to old Ernest. He was the master.”

Rain cocked her head to one side and her hair fell from its familiar spot tucked behind her ear. “Are you ever going to let me read what you’ve written?”

“Maybe if you visit me in jail.”

“Malcolm!”

“Oh, I’m kidding, you don’t have to visit.”

“You’ll never change.” Rain stole a glance at her watch, but her smile invited Malcolm to prolong the conversation.

“It’s the old classic story: boy meets girl, falls for her as a kid, chases her for years.”

“For years?” Rain raised her eyebrows.

“For decades, in fact. He chases her to Brazil where she’s doing volunteer work with a church group, building houses, teaching English, and sharing her unmatched skills in the art of Pac-Man.”

“Please tell me you made up that last one.”

“Buy the book.” Malcolm winked.

“May I assume the handsome boy gets the girl?”

Malcolm pointed with both index fingers. “Ha! Who said he was handsome?”

Rain blushed, but only slightly, and no one alive but Malcolm knew her well enough to notice. Rain put on her seatbelt and pretended her mirrors needed adjusting. “Just be sure they both end up happy, no matter what.”

“Well, happy endings aren’t really my thing, are they?”

“Maybe they should be.”

“And maybe I’ll finally get one of my own one day.” Malcolm shrugged.

Rain reached out through the window and took Malcolm’s hand. “Happy endings come in different packages, remember that.” Rain rolled up her window and waved good-bye.

Malcolm watched her descend the driveway and turn onto Route 11.

Rain watched him in the rearview mirror.

“Well?” Samantha asked when Malcolm returned to the living room.

“Well, what? Let’s read.”

They retook their places around the dining room table.
